The
Dark Days ahead for us all means one thing. The Holiday Season is upon us. I know the traditional season is Christmas season, but in my world it has always been Thanksgiving, Advent, Christmas, and then New Years. As the day light shortens, it will once again begin to lengthen. The noticeable lifecycle of 2021 is winding down, and the life cycle of 2022 is spinning up.
The cycling days are moving more inside for me, not due to temperature but due to the light availability. I am not a huge fan of night riding, unless that is the entire intent of the adventure. I have been known to do late night metrics and 100 mile rides on a Friday or Saturday night. Those expeditions are always fun and weird random back roads antics usually unfold.
October and November this year had me off the bike mostly. I was still working at my employers but working in roles that are not my traditional role. I was making parts as work, as I continued to earn my paycheck as the labor force walked out to hold a work stoppage. The labor dispute was resolved and all parties are back to their normally scheduled programming. By working 10 hour days, I was missing out on early AM trainers or evening rides. The desire to ride my bike was replaced with the desire to go to sleep.
This holiday season I am just happy I am here in America. I am actually still optimistic we live in the best darn country in the world and even in history. Yes we have our problems, but I often wonder how many of those problems are exacerbated by the constant gas we pour on them, and then wonder why the flames are so large. This season, I am challenging myself to listen actively and not try to convince the other person of my beliefs. For years I was around toxic people and their need to be right. One by one those people have left my life. Recently one left, and the funny thing is you do not understand their dark energy they have till they are gone. So I would ask, if you are reading this, do not engage in arguments or discussions that involve taking sides. If the conversation goes there, let that person talk and really do not encourage their rant. Just listen to them. By all means try to change the topic to something neutral.
Have a great Thanksgiving and may you enjoy the time with your family and the ones you care about.
Thanks and Godspeed
Dave
Yes, we are starting a Waterloo Christmas ride. It is not intended to do anything other than be a reason to ride a bike a short distance and be around others. The length is a whopping 3 miles. To sum that is more miles than they have rode for the previous 10 years. That is the person I want there. If you want to bang out miles and demonstrate your cycling skills, there is a ride in Cedar Falls on the 5th of December for that. I believe they are meeting up 6pm and leaving from Overmen Park. When: 29 November 2023 @ 6pm Where: Kingsley Elementary School parking lot. On the street parking is fine, look for No Parking sides. Route: Link Here on Strava App Ending: Lighthouse Lounge, bring a bike lock. Parking is extremely limited, Also it is a Cash Only Bar. See what happens this year, and may be this grows, who knows. I started the Cedar Fall...
